This week: don’t go back to go forward, the guardians are back, and two other trailers cause chatter ahead of their December release dates.
BOX OFFICE WINNERS AND LOSERS
The Accountant tops the box office at number one, having drawn about $31 million at the box office. Starring Ben Affleck and Anna Kendrick, people have been split down the middle when it comes to how they feel about this film. On the one hand, some say the story is unrealistic; Affleck’s character is on the autism spectrum, and the criticism is the portrayal is questionable. On the other hand, some appreciate the action. Either way, it’s still in theatres, so you can check that out if you’re interested. The Girl on the Train is number two, and is slowly winding down, with all of the talk about it not living up to expectations. While Emily Blunt was fairly good in the role, the rest of the adaptation just didn’t work for the big screen. The book sold millions of copies around the world, and left many people disappointed. Kevin Hart’s What Now film is in at three, while Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is in at four; Deepwater Horizon is number five.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
In a movie where Tom Cruise essentially plays himself – just under another name – you get a lot of action, and major cheese. Read my review here.
Keeping up With the Joneses
Isla Fisher and Zach Galifianakis star, with Gal Gadot and Jon Hamm. You may remember Gadot from the Batman vs. Superwoman flick earlier this year – she played Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. Hamm – of course – is best known for his role in Mad Men. While Fisher is fun – and often funny – Galifianakis has had a questionable year. He was in Masterminds earlier in 2016 – that film essentially tanked.
Ouija: Origin of Evil
Starrring Doug Jones, Elizabeth Reaser, and Henry Thomas, the film is set in the late 1960’s. A widow and her daughters are trying to keep their seance scheme going, but when things get real – that’s right – an actual nasty spirit works its way into the picture, the family will have to try and save the younger daughter.
Boo! A Madea Halloween
Features Tyler Perry playing basically every character in this comedy-horror film. This time, Madea has to deal with a bothersome Halloween, in which she fends off killers, paranormal poltergeists, ghosts…and the like.
TRAILERS THAT HAVE PEOPLE TALKING
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
The gang is back and ready to explore the cosmos – again! Set just two months after the film, the Guardians hope to help Starlord/Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) dig up more information about his parents. While this is only a teaser, there’s enough there to get people excited for the film, methinks. It’s in theatres May 5th, 2017.
Assassin’s Creed
With Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, the final video game film adaptation of the year hits the big screen December 21st. Fassbender plays career criminal Callum Lynch, saved just before his execution by a scientist hoping to gain access to Lynch’s past. This “past” takes Lynch to the Spanish Inquisition.
Rogue One: a Star Wars Story
This is the last trailer before the film comes out December 16th. In it, we learn more about Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones (we’ll also get to see her in Inferno, which comes out at the end of the month). It turns out she has a link to the Death Star…but in what way?
OUT ON BLURAY, DVD, DIGITAL DOWNLOAD
Earlier this week, we had Boyhood, which originally came out in 2014. It went on to win a spate of accolades, including best actress for Patricia Arquette. It’s considered one of the most acclaimed films of the 21st century, and it took 11 years to shoot! Alice Through the Looking Glass is also out. I really didn’t like it.
Next week, we’ll see Lights Out and Nerve. Lights Out had a few smart moments, but I was disappointed with the ending. Nerve is definitely something I will check out on video on demand, if the option is there. Dave Franco and Emma Roberts star. This film is about a game where users are engaged based on the “truth-or-dare” scenario.
For a “Flashback Friday” recommendation, it’s going to be Talladega Nights: the Ballad of Ricky Bobby, starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reily. You can now get the “Big Hairy American Winning Edition” Bluray!
