LISTEN – THE REEL REPORT – FEBRUARY 19TH 2016

This week: Deadpool is still number one, Star Wars: the Force Awakens is starting to slide out of the top five, and a romantic movie trailer is trending days after Valentine’s Day.

Winners and Losers at the North American Box Office:

Deadpool is king at the box office again – coming in at number one. B.C. boy Ryan Reynolds and 20th Century Fox have managed to cash in, earning more than $325 million dollars worldwide. It’s number two in highest earner for 2016, and behind a Chinese blockbuster called The Mermaid.

At number two: Kung Fu Panda 3, and at number three, it’s How to Be Single with Rebel Wilson and Dakota Johnston. In the number four spot, it’s Zoolander 2. I don’t recommend seeing it – it’s nothing like the first one, and the honeymoon with the franchise is over.

Still going strong since its December release, Star Wars: the Force Awakens is number five. It’s basically stalled: it’s sitting at a little less than $920 million to date.

Out in Theatres this Week:

The Witch

All you horror movie fans out there – this one is supposed to be for you. It stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Kate Dickie and Ralph Ineson. The film chronicles a Puritan family, living alone on the edge of a New England wilderness. The movie is rated R, which really does come across in the trailer. I’m hoping to see this one.

The Risen

Joseph Fiennes is back, and so is Tom Felton of Harry Potter fame. Fiennes plays Clavius, a powerful Roman Centurion charged by Pontius Pilate to investigate the rumours of a risen Jewish messiah who most people know as…Jesus of Nazareth. Clavius needs to make sure to keep tabs on the body to prevent an imminent uprising in Jerusalem. I think this movie could do quite well, seeing as it’s Lent.

Race

It’s about time! I’m so glad they’re making a movie about this story. Starring Canadian Stephan James, this movie is about track and field star Jesse Owens. Owens went on to win four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. This movie goes over some of the tough decision he had to make to get there.

Overall this weekend, these three new releases aren’t expected to make too much at the box office. Each one is slated to bring in somewhere between five and ten million dollars, so we’ll see what happens!

Trailers that Have People Talking:

Because it was Valentine’s Day last week, romantic movie Me Before You is trending. This upcoming film is based on a book by Jojo Moyes, and – stars Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin. Lou Clark ends up getting a job taking care of Will Traynor, who is quadriplegic. The two teach each other some important life lessons.

Now, if you’re like me and you want to read the novel before the book, you have until June to do it – that’s when this is slated to come out. Just to give you an idea of what some critics thought of the book, the New York Times – in its review – after finishing it, said the critic didn’t want to review it – they wanted to reread it. No pressure, film. No pressure.

New Release Highlights:

This week, it’s Black Mass, with Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger – a notorious criminal best known for being the leader of the Boston Irish Mob Crew back in the 70’s. No  Oscar nods for Depp in this role at the Academy Awards, which some said they were shocked to see. Speaking of Academy Awards, two critically acclaimed movies – Brooklyn and Spotlight – are having their releases next week. Also getting a release: The Good Dinosaur. This was Pixar’s second cartoon in 2015 (a rarity, as the studio generally just works on ONE each year) – the first one, of course, being Inside Out. As for my Flashback Friday recommendation: strongly recommending you sit down and watch To Kill a Mockingbird. Read the book on Saturday, watch the movie on Sunday, your weekend is all covered. You’re welcome.

If that doesn’t fly with you, then you can check out No Way Out starring The Bodyguard’s Kevin Costner. No Way Out is a remake of the 1948 movie, The Big Clock. It had a BluRay release earlier this week. WARNING: major cheese coming up in this trailer.
