This week: a couple of new wide releases (that couldn’t be more different) and a special film about a former Canuck makes its way to Vancouver.

BOX OFFICE WINNERS AND LOSERS

Sound the alarm! Suicide Squad is no longer at number one – that crown now belongs to Don’t Breathe, starring Jane Levy (who was a part of the Evil Dead reboot a while back). I gave the film a perfect score last week; you can take a look at the review here. And with Don’t Breathe at number one, that means Suicide Squad is at number two. It’s slowly moving into the $300 million domestic notch, but it appears interest has diminished greatly. Also still bringing in the bacon (ha, ha, ha…) is Sausage Party, the rated-R cartoon about – erm, “food porn?” Seth Rogen’s animated flick is in at number three. Bringing up the end of the top five list is War Dogs, and Kubo and the Two Strings. It’s almost criminal just how under loved Kubo has been; my review of the film – which you can find here – explains why.

OUT IN THEATRES

Morgan

This sci-fi thriller stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Kate Mara, and Toby Jones (if you’re not familiar with Jones, you should watch season one of Wayward Pines – he played a similar character, but the best part is…he’s SO CREEPY!). Morgan is a genetically engineered human, created and raised in a lab. But when she lashes out, a troubleshooter will have to determine if Morgan should be terminated. Unfortunately, this screening coincided with Don’t Breathe, but I will be catching a showing of this in the next day or so. I’ll be sure to share my review when it’s all set!

The Light Between Oceans 

A romantic period drama, it stars Oscar winner Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender – who are actually engaged in real life (cue the awwwwwwwwws). Set after the first world war, it chronicles a yarn about a lighthouse keeper and his wife, who are living off the coast of Western Australia. They are raising a baby they rescued from an adrift rowboat, and are happy, but a discovery threatens to tear that happiness apart.

This is actually based on a book by Derek Cianfrance, and the book received lukewarm reviews.

SPECIAL TO THE REEL REPORT: PAVOL DEMITRA: 38

I had the good fortune of talking to the two local people responsible for bringing a documentary about former Vancouver Canuck Pavol Demitra to the Rio Theatre. OUT ON BLURAY, DVD, DIGITAL DOWNLOAD

If you want to own The Jungle Book or Me Before You, it’s already out for purchase. But, you’ll have to wait until next week to purchase films like Money Monster, or Now You See Me 2. Both of these films had a lukewarm reception.

As for my Flasback Friday recommendation, if you’re going to stay inside, and file through the classics in your film library, look for something starring Gene Wilder. The American comic actor passed away at the age of 83. For me, my Wilder film is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. That movie used to show up on T.V. like clockwork every Easter, and “Pure Imagination” would be stuck in my head for days afterwards.
